“Open world” really has become just a buzzword for AAA game studios, just an extra you slap onto a videogame to make it more “marketable” and clickbaity to a mass of uninformed consumers. How did we let this happen? How did we let the videogame industry at large (save for a few notable exceptions) suck the excitement and the mystique out of incredibly large worlds with the potential to lend themselves to freedom in player expression?
